It’s super sick how many black women in the US lose their life during childbirth.
this opens up a great point of how black women are more likely to die from childbirth than white women. and it’s most likely due to the experiments that j marion smith “the father of gynecology” saying that black women felt less pain. it’s sad it’s been internalized.
In America we receive care based on our insurance. So keep in mind that when we say that black women dying in childbirth more than any other race of women (in America) we’re not exaggerating.
Its a combination of hospitals not listening to women when they say they’re in pain. Black people wrongly being thought of as having a higher pain tolerance than other races, and sometimes just plain old racism leads to black women dying from easily treatable complications during or after childbirth.
Serena Williams, a woman who recognized that she was having serious symptoms a day after childbirth had to demand that they run a test on her. She had to DEMAND that a nurse at a hospital provided care for her after she gave birth. Then when they tested her they found out that she DID HAVE A SERIOUS LIFE THREATENING ISSUE.
Fuck ups like that lead to people dying.

Essence did an astonishing report on Black women and maternal death! If I’m not mistaken, we die at 3 times the rate than White women (don’t quote me).
